Rock Island Roadhouse:
The Travelers' Refuge
A Midwest Paranormal Deep Dive
Some buildings serve as a permanent record of the weary. Located at 500 20th Street, the Rock Island Roadhouse Click to open side panel for more information (formerly the historic YMCA) has stood since 1912 as a massive, four-story sentinel. Built during the height of the industrial age, it served as the primary sanctuary for those moving through the heart of the Quad Cities.

On July 25th, Get Haunted Midwest moves into this fortress of brick and concrete. This isn't just an investigation of a building; it’s an inquiry into the spirits of the thousands of railroad workers, soldiers, and transients who called these halls "home" for a single night and some who never checked out.
A Legacy of Boarders and Brothels
The Roadhouse is a masterclass in residual human energy. Unlike a private home, the YMCA saw a constant, rotating population of people in transition, men seeking work on the rails, soldiers heading to war, and, according to local legend, those seeking the "shadow economy" of the building's rumored speakeasy and brothel era.
-
The Trunk Elevator: The central stairwell features a rare trunk elevator, once used to haul the heavy luggage of travelers. It is now a hotspot for phantom sounds and disembodied screams.
-
The Third and Fourth Floors: Once housing 100 bedrooms for boarders, these upper tiers are notorious for shadow figures darting between rooms and the sound of phantom footsteps that refuse to stop at a door.
-
The Deep Basement: From the locker rooms to the filled-in pool, the lower levels retain a heavy, oppressive energy where "German-speaking" specters and residual mob-era echoes have been reported.

A city in flames. This historic image captures the devastating fire that reshaped the landscape and the lingering energy of the Rock Island site.
The Investigation: Season One Launch
In the spirit of our Season One: The Spiritualist Movement series, we are here to document the "Transient Energy" of a building designed for those on the move.
-
Modern Tech: We utilize a suite of professional environmental sensors to monitor the massive hallways and isolated lodging rooms. We are looking for anomalies in a building built of fireproof concrete and iron—a perfect conductor for spirit energy.
-
Ancestral Methods: We step away from the equipment to utilize traditional techniques from the early days of spiritualism. In a place that housed so many seeking "purpose and connection," we use raw, intuitive methods to see who is still waiting for their train to arrive.

The infinite corridor. The third floor of Rock Island remains one of our most consistent hotspots for auditory phenomena.
The Get Haunted Difference
-
Real History: We honor the 130-year legacy of the building and the vision of those who saved it.
-
Authenticity: No actors, no tricks—just the raw, transitioning energy of a Bryan icon.
-
Zero Tolerance: This is a place of respect. Any disrespectful behavior will result in immediate removal.
